September was a busy time for the Pink Polka Dots!

We volunteered at the Seattle Brain Cancer Walk, a very large fundraiser for brain cancer research at Swedish Hospital. Working in the children's area, we painted faces, handed out balloons, and manned prize tables. The event was a huge success--it raised more than $900,000!

We also attended the Seattle Run of Hope, which supports the same lab as we do. It was a fabulous event and raised more than $265,000!

Keep these annual events on your radar. If you're in the Seattle area, you should participate next year!

To honor their friend, the girls started the Pink Polka Dots Guild and carried out a garage sale that Sydney had planned, one whose proceeds would go to help people with brain cancer. The garage sale raised $9,000, but the Guild was just getting going. Next came lemonade stands, greeting cards and even an annual golf tournament. PPD appeared in the latest issue of Shorecrest High school's student newspaper.Here is the article by SC junior Allison Ezeonwu.

The Pink Polka Dots Guild was founded four years ago by Maddy Berkman, and Shorecrest students, Sierra Alef, and Kelsey Josund. This group raises money for brain cancer research in memory of their friend Sydney Coxon. In 2006, Coxon lost her battle with an inoperable brain tumor called a brainstem glioma. Since then, the Pink Polka Dots have been fundraising to find a cure, recently reaching a third of a million dollars.
The guild started when Josund read an article in the Seattle Times about Seattle Children’s Hospital’s new CEO, Dr. Thomas Hansen, who was starting a campaign to end all childhood disease. The three girls met with Children’s Guild Association; and through it met Dr. Jim Olson, a brain cancer researcher at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
Olson is an innovator, discovering “tumor paint,” a substance that is mainly scorpion venom of the Israeli Death Stalker Scorpion. According to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, the “paint” goes directly to cancerous cells, lighting them up so surgeons can see them and more accurately remove them for an effective surgery, rather than guessing which cells to take out, which sometimes led to complications for the patients. In order to persist with the costly experiments, researchers need money from federal grants as well as outside sources.
This is where Pink Polka Dots does work, making money by holding annual golf tournaments, selling cards at farmers’ markets, self-defense seminars, book fairs, dances, benefit concerts, practice AP testing, and tons of donations.
“[I] feel most accomplished as a Pink Polka Dots member by the discoveries that Dr. Olson is making in the lab that will be saving lives as soon as they get through the FDA,” said junior Maki Mulienberg, a member of the guild since sixth grade.
Also taking pride in the work she does with Pink Polka Dots, is Allison Jones, a member of the group since its foundation. “After seeing and living with what Sydney went through, it’s heartwarming to know that I’m doing what I can to help other children going through similar experiences.”
All of their hard work has led to numerous awards and TV spots for the girls, including Patty Murray’s Golden Tennis Shoe Award in 2009, speaking at TED conferences, features in Teen Vogue in 2008, 2009, and numerous appearances on King 5.
Member and Shorecrest sophomore Ethan Hausman is looking forward to the future of Pink Polka Dots. “Hopefully we will raise lots more money and the organization will grow and flourish.” He also encourages more people, boys and girls alike to come to the events and help support the guild.

4th Annual Golf Tournament brings in over $70,000

Pink Polka Dots and Intec's 4th Annual Sydney Coxon Memorial Golf tournament brought in over $70,000 for pediatric brain tumor research this year. Our golfers, diners, volunteers, matching funds program, sponsors, and donators made this tremendous success all possible. Despite hard economic times, this is the most money that PPD has ever raised at the annual golf tournament, thanks to generous people who feel strongly about ending childhood brain cancer. Pink Polka Dots has now raised about a third of a million dollars in total over the past four years. We are truly amazed at the success of the event, and we thank everyone who was involved.

Today, founding members Maddy, Sierra, and Kelsey went to Redmond to speak at an independently organized TED event (to learn more about TEDx, click here). We were among a group of many inspiring young speakers and performers from all over the nation. The purpose of the event was for young people's ideas to be heard by other young people. It was a great opportunity for PPD to raise awareness and inspire other people to fight for a cause that they believe in.

Pink Polka Dot's segment for King 5 was aired again today at 7. If you saw us on TV and would like to join the fight against brain cancer, please see the "Make A Difference" section on the sidebar of this page.
We would also like to make 2 corrections to King 5's information, which was the same information aired a year ago. The Brian Waite Band concert that was mentioned at the end of the segment actually happened in February 2009. They also said that we have raised $100,000, but the up-to-date number is about $150,000.

At Dr. Olsen's lab this Tuesday, the Pink Polka Dots will be handing off the $51,256 we've raised this year. Our events in the past year include our third annual golf tournament, second annual dance, a benefit concert, and many craft sales. Some achievements we've made in the past year are winning the Golden Tennis Shoe Award, a feature in Teen Vogue, and many appearances on King 5 News.

The Pink Polka Dots is receiving a Golden Tennis Shoe Award this year!

Senator Patty Murray is holding the 14th Annual Golden Tennis Shoe Awards soon. For those of you wondering what that is: in the 80's, a preschool program that Patty Murray taught was being threatened by budget cuts. She set out to stop this from happening, and the state legislator told her that she couldn't make a difference because she was "just a mom in tennis shoes." In spite of what they said, Murray stopped the budget cuts. For the last 14 years, Senator Murray has recognized 2-4 people/groups every year that do extraordinary things for others.

One of our members Charlotte Berkman is taking part in the Star Guild's American Girl fashion show. The Star Guild raises money for uncompensated care at Children's Hospital. Charlotte is dressed as "Samantha." The events take place this weekend.

The Brian Waite band presents 20,000 Volts Under The Sea, a rock 'n roll adventure. 100% of ticket proceeds and 10% of CD sales from this event will benefit The Pink Polka Dots Guild. The concert takes place at Shorecrest Performing Arts Center on Saturday, February 21, at 2 pm.

We held our first quarterly meeting of the fiscal year today at Children's Hospital. We also presented Dr. Olson with a $56,686 check from our last fiscal year, and worked on filming for our upcoming appearance on Evening Magazine.

Filming for Biz Kids today!

Today the Pink Polka Dots Guild got up early to be at our local bank at 8 a.m. and film for PBS's Biz Kids. After leaving the bank, we spent the rest of the day filming at Children's Hospital, where we also ran our booth outside the gift shop and raised $180. We'll update the website when we know when our episode of Biz Kids will be on.
